  2. Plug in the router and the modem to the power source. Wait till they stabilize completely and you can continue.
  3. Connect the PC to the router and in the Notification area look for the Network icon. You will easily recognize this icon since it may look like several vertical bars going up from the bottom left side or like a tiny PC monitor.
  4. When you click the network icon you will be offered to select a wireless network. Look for the network name that is the same as your router brand. Many router manufacturers set their brand name as a default network name to their routers and at the same time they give you the wireless password you can use to connect to the newly created network. Please note that these details have to be changed later along with the default router username and password.

In most cases, you won’t have any problems setting up your wireless network in Windows 7. However some routers can be a bit troublesome so it is better to set them up using the setup CD that came with them. Otherwise you can try and setup the router manually.

Let’s see how you can do this.

Use the Setup CD to Setup the Wireless router

  1. Check whether the wireless router is completely disconnected from all other devices such as the modem and the computer.
  2. Insert the setup CD in your computer or if you don’t have it, download it from the official manufacturer’s page and run it with administrative privileges.
  3. Pay close attention to the instructions presented on the screen. You will be asked to connect components one by one – modem, PC, router. You will be also asked to create a wireless network name and protect the network with a password. There are small chances that something will cause you problems, but if this happens you may try to configure your router manually.

Setup the router Without a Setup CD

  1. Use an Ethernet cable to connect the modem and the router.
  2. Plug in the wireless router to the power source and wait till it boots completely. Check whether there aren’t any lights on the router that are blinking constantly.
  3. Use an Ethernet cable to connect the PC and the router.
  4. Now it’s time to connect to the router’s web based utility. To do this you have to type the default router IP address, which is normally printed in the user manual, in the browser URL bar. In most cases this IP will be 192.168.1.1 according to this site 192168ll.net but you can also try 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.0.1.
  5. When you type the correct IP you will have to enter the default username and password. These can be found in the user manual as well. Otherwise you can search the internet for these login details, just type the router model and add password at the end.
  6. After you login to the router successfully, you will be able to change the network name and secure the network with a strong password.
  7. After you complete these steps you can test the wireless connection. Then disconnect your PC or laptop from the wireless router and try to connect to the wireless network or use your tablet or mobile phone to connect to the network.

Words of caution:

One thing you shouldn’t ignore is to protect your wireless network with a strong password. If you don’t do this it is quite possible that other will use your internet bandwidth without your authorization and even access your router settings and mess up with the configurations.

They can also lock you out from the router settings by changing the default username and password. This means that you will have to reset the router in order to login again. If you come up with a complicated password make sure to write it down. At the end it takes much less time to secure the network with a password than to set up everything from scratch again.
